What are wrinkles?
Wrinkles are markings that appear on the face in the form of creases, folds and ridges. There are four different types of wrinkles: ageing, atrophic crinkling, permanent creasing and expression. Ageing wrinkles appear as a result of natural ageing. Atrophic crinkling are parallel lines that disappear when the skin is taut – these can also appear on the body. Permanent creasing tends to appear on the cheeks, upper lip and neckline. Repetitive stretching and extension of the skin causes lines that are known as expression wrinkles.
Wrinkles usually begin occurring after the age of 25. The decrease in the skin’s collagen and elastin has an impact on softness and volume, and it accelerates the appearance of wrinkles. If left untreated, some wrinkles can develop into prominent deep crevices or furrows.
What causes wrinkles?
Although how your skin naturally ages depends on your genes, there are other factors that contribute to wrinkling. The loss of collagen and elasticity leads to skin sagging and developing wrinkles. Repeated facial expressions, like smiling, squinting, and frowning use muscles that form groves under the skin’s surface. As you age, skin loses its flexibility and isn’t able to easily bounce back once an expression is formed. Permanent wrinkles then become a feature.
Premature wrinkles are caused by dehydration, excessive exposure to the sun, poor skin care, and smoking. Genetic factors, and some types of medication, can also have an impact on the skin’s structure.
Skin-surfacing treatments that include age-defying ingredients like retinol can help to smooth out wrinkles in the skin, diminish fine lines, and help to boost collagen production. Hyaluronic acid plumps up the skin with moisture so that suppleness is restored. Antioxidants stop free radical damage and encourage cell repair, and the rebuilding of collagen and elastin.
Botox injections can effectively eliminate wrinkles and improve the skin’s texture. The treatment involves injecting a small amount of Botox into the superficial layers of the muscles and dermis, to freshen up the appearance of the face.
