What are around the eye wrinkles?
The skin around the eye area is sensitive and thinner than the skin on other parts of the face. Fine lines and wrinkles around and under the eye can also appear as deeper and more pronounced expression lines that are commonly known as crow’s feet, in the outer corners of the eye. Creases, ridges, dark circles, puffiness and discolouration can also prematurely age the skin around the eyes.
What causes around the eye wrinkles?
The skin around the eyes is very thin, and because it contains fewer oil glands, minimal collagen is produced. Eye wrinkles are caused by the contraction of facial muscles every time that you make a facial expression. These wrinkles can be dynamic – visible when you smile – or static – visible all of the time.
Smoking has a harmful impact on your face. It damages collagen and elastin, which in turn impairs the strength and elasticity of the skin. Not hydrating your body properly causes the skin to lose moisture so that its appearance looks prematurely aged. Skin can also become parched as a result of the drop in estrogen that is caused by hormonal and menopausal changes. Too much exposure to the sun can lead to the formation of wrinkles around the eyes, as well as sun spots and hyper-pigmentation.
Although it’s not possible to completely prevent the formation of eye wrinkles, skin-boosting treatments can help to reduce the severity, and minimise the signs of ageing.
A non-evasive treatment like micro-needling targets the wrinkles around the eyes and boosts skin repair, and the production of collagen and elastin. As the skin is rehydrated, it becomes smoothed out and the appearance of wrinkles around the eyes is reduced. Hyaluronic acid fillers plump up the skin and produce natural looking results.
Microdermabrasion can improve the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and sun damage to the skin, by removing the uneven outer layer of skin and stimulating new skin growth. Chemical peels provide an alternative treatment option.
Topical creams and serums that contain a cocktail of Vitamin C, retinol, hyaluronic acid, ceramides, antioxidants and peptides are designed to help combat the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines in the eye area.
